Parking, opposite the Patterdale Hotel, in the pay & display car park, the walk starts by heading North along the road towards the school. Turning right between some buildings there are signs pointing towards Place Fell. Now heading towards Side Farm, Place Fell really starts to open up in front of you.
The route up is well marked, if a little uneven but this is the Lake District. Every few meters the landscape seems to change and a different perspective of the hills can be seen. Ahead is Deepdale Common, then as you turn back on yourself Brothers Water comes in to view over your left shoulder. Again the footpath is easy to see and well stoned. The accent is fairly steep but not over facing.
Once heading up towards the peak, over Patterdale Common, a look West towards Glenridding gives a very good view of the imposing Stridings Edge heading to Helvellyn.
Once up past Round How things level out and a pleasant last few hundred meters to the trig point allows you to get your breath back. The descent North to Ullswater doesn’t feel to steep and once down to lake level the walk back to Side Farm is relatively easy.
